Ons verhaal

We can talk about bikes until we're blue in the face, but what is the real story behind Felix Cycles?

Spoiler alert: it involves bikes...

IN THE BEGINNING…

Hi, I'm Steven. When I think of travelling and cycling, I start to get that itch. And if I can combine those two passions, then I'm in seventh heaven. Here on Earth, heaven to me looks like criss-crossing lines running through Europe, Morocco, Japan and more. But it was in Uganda where I kicked off my first expedition with a Felix bike sporting Felix's unique orange and grey livery.

Let's talk about our name. Want to know where the name Felix Cycles comes from? Well, I'll tell you. One day, on a long ride through Japan, I bought a hand-made doll from an old lady at a roadside stall. I named the doll Felix and she has been my loyal travelling companion and lucky charm ever since. We added ‘Cycles’ to the name just to make it clear to everyone that we're all about bikes.

After a 25-year career in the logistics and manufacture of surgical equipment and medicines, I started training as a bike mechanic, bike dealer and frame repair technician. All those years of experience in a production environment and my ongoing quest to find and work with talented people has proven very useful when it comes to specifying, building and delivering high-quality custom bikes.

During my training I learned from supremely skilled mechanics, I had an opportunity to work with a frame welder who had 40 years of experience and I was lucky to be able to do an internship with Greg Van Avermaet and Rik Verbrugghe. I then went to Velo in Leuven and a new world opened up and I started to dream: Perhaps one day I could develop my own creative platform and maybe even my own bicycle brand - all driven by my passion and love for bikes and cycling.

The first custom-built Felix bike rolled out of our workshop in 2018. From Belgium with love. Not just love for bikes, but also love for our planet. That's how I came up with the idea of re-using and decorating old frames. That idea started really taking shape - figuratively and literally - when I brought in artists like Lieve and Stephan. We now work with a dozen artists from all over the world, each with their own unique style. Just take a look.

And speaking of collaboration… We've joined forces with Oxford Bikes in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, so that we can now offer e-bikes featuring our unique customised Frame Art.

Starting in February, you can read our blog, which will feature articles about Felix and where we're going, as well as bike travel stories from Eastern and Southern Europe, Morocco, Uganda, Japan and soon Iran.
